In 2020, Dr. Zuleka Ru-Glo Henderson revisited the question: What is mine to do? She had already been on a mission with colleagues to seek ancestral instructions on healing our past, present, and future by looking at the relationships, roles, practices and strategies of Black healers and seekers of healing. During the intimate time she spent delving into the artifacts and testimonies of our ancestors, the vision/revelation for next steps that emerged was to find a way to continue, and build on, cultural and ancestral practices that laid the foundation for intergenerational Black wellness. Ultimately, she was inspired to use the model of intergenerational healing and wellbeing that came from this research as a blueprint for The Center for Black WellBEing, LLC (CBW).
CBW started in 2021 as a new branch of graymatters medical practice, a social justice informed, mission driven clinical practice. During that time, CBW offered a free virtual community event called The Digital Oasis and then expanded to bring our anti-racist wellness approach and expertise to organizations. In 2022, CBW was relaunched as a standalone entity and expanded offerings to include a Black WellBEing Think Tank (in partnership with Root Salve Wellness, LLC) and Black wellness research consulting.
Black people have never been monolithic in our pathways to wellness. Therefore, we must keep a diversity of approaches alive and available for our people to powerfully choose our wellness journeys and strategies.
CBW believes that creating safe spaces for Black people to explore what we hold in our consciousness about healing is an essential component of advancing intergenerational Black wellBEing.
CBW believes that individuals, groups, organizations, and communities must identify and critically reflect on how our beliefs and behaviors support or challenge wellbeing in order to realize equity in healing and wellness for all.
We center joy, creativity, and play in all that we do and Center Black WellBEing as an affirmation, a mantra, and a daily practice.
At CBW we envision a world where all Black people have awareness of healing as a possibility & connection to diverse resources, practices, and communities to activate their own healing journeys and advance intergenerational Black wellBEing.
The Center for Black WellBEing is a Black-woman owned wellness firm that advances intergenerational Black well-being through community engagement and wellness consulting.
We support Black folks who want to explore wellness in non-clinical, community settings by creating unique and fun events for healing/wellBEing exploration and discovery.
We help racially diverse organizations enhance the conditions for wellBEing by custom designing and delivering anti-racist, culturally responsive wellness programs, retreats, and executive coaching services. Our practices support organizations with creating opportunities for healing and repair, and with becoming places where Black people, and the Black communities served by these organizations, can experience wellBEing and thrive.
